Developing as a Professional Educator

The overarching, long term CTSP goal I set was CTSP 2.6 employing classroom procedures and routines for learning. My initial assessment was Applying, My final assessment was Applying.

I believe I have made significant progress towards achieving this goal. At the beginning of the year I used a few different procedures and routines for learning. Most of these procedures and routines had to do with extrinsic rewards. I would verbally recognized or give students, table groups, and the entire class opportunities to earn prizes for on task work, respectful behavior, and responsibility. Although this does work to an extent and I continue to use these methods, I have developed other routines and procedures that provide more engagement and interest for the students. These new routines and procedures that have developed throughout the induction process include: providing more joy in the classroom by the use of games (Kahoot.it, Code.org, and Tenmarks Lab), expanding my use of differentiation through assessment by using technology resources (Tenmarks Teach, Assignments, and Assessment). Even though I have made significant progress in this goal, I felt that there is still opportunity for improvement before I reach the next level of Integrating. However, I am excited about the progress that I have made throughout the process.

My areas of strength include:  1. Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning, 4. Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students, and 6.Developing as a Professional Educator. All six standards provide opportunities for continuous improvement. I do not want to be satisfied with maintaining my state of professionalism and instructional practices. I commit to always improving because education is always evolving, and I believe it is important to adapt and evolve with the changes to provide a standard of excellence in the classroom.

Throughout this induction process, I have been surprised by my ability to keep a positive attitude despite the workload placed on new educators. Every aspect of teaching is new to me and requires much more time and effort than a seasoned veteran because of experience. On top of that we are expected to take on more tasks to complete the induction process. It takes a vast amount of creativity and stamina to complete all of the tasks placed on new educators.

A professional goal I have for myself beyond induction is to obtain a Master's degree in curriculum development. I have identified this as a need in order to fully support my students educational needs. I believe this knowledge will allow me to reach students on a deeper level when designing and planning my instruction. I will be able to better differentiate for all levels of achievement and student needs. In order to reach this goal, I will begin researching the different university options in the area and online. Also, I will confer with other colleagues at my site, who have received or are in the process of obtaining their Master's degree,  to get a consensus about what options are the best and inquire about their experiences. I will assess my goal attainment by completing the required course work and receiving the degree.

To remain a connected educator throughout my career I will dedicate myself to be a lifelong learner. I have always enjoyed the education environment and am constantly researching and educating myself on a variety of topics. I believe technology is an important aspect of reaching today's youth, and so I continually search out and use technology tools to import into the classroom. Furthermore, I will utilize my district's provided opportunities for continuing education. These opportunities include many different focuses, including:  English learner support, technology education, physical education, nutritional education, etc. Finally, I plan to continue to collaborate and communicate with other colleagues. Some of the best knowledge comes from asking the right people the right questions.

To sustain the energy it takes to be passionate about students, teaching, and learning it is important to be healthy. I can continue to eat healthy, stay physically active, get plenty of rest, provide myself with time for activities that I enjoy, and spending time with friends and loved ones. I strive to maintain a healthy diet, but I do enjoy to treat myself in moderation. I am a member of local gym and regularly attend 3-5 times a week. I try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, however, sometimes this can me hard to stick to. I have many hobbies that allow me to take a break from the stresses of work. Some of these are learning to play the guitar, hiking/ camping, reading, crafting, and traveling. Lastly, personal relationships are important to me, and so I make time for all the wonderful people in my life. These are some of the ways I can continue to support my well-being personally.

Professionally, I can improve time management, organization, communication with colleagues and staff, and set attainable goals. Time management and organization are very related. By improving upon these two areas I can relieve many of the stresses that can be associated with the sometimes overwhelming tasks I face as an educator. By having open and positive communication with colleagues and staff I can avoid unwanted conflict and gain useful advice. By setting attainable professional goals I can always have something to look forward to attaining and build confidence in my ability as an educator.

One of my favorite quotes from my reflective coach is as follows:  "I think you are a SUPER STAR!  and a model of incorporating engagement, accountability, and language into math." -Jennifer Ortiz

As a new teacher it is important to find experienced teachers and ask questions. Even if you don't agree with everything your colleagues say, evaluate and use what works for you and your class. You don't have to do it on your own.
